In the Comfort Zone

Joe recently accepted a position as an Actuarial Analyst at NJM. He interned and was a student worker in the Actuarial Department during the summers of 2022 and 2023 and continues to work there part time. Joe will advance to full-time status after he graduates from Rutgers University this spring.

“I’ve always felt comfortable here, and I place a lot of value in comfort,” he said. “I love collaborating with the people in the Actuarial Department and have always felt like what I do matters. To continue building on the projects I’ve worked on is a great opportunity, and I’m looking forward to even bigger projects that have a larger impact. I can’t wait to start here full time.”

Joe began formulating his career plans in high school. He recognized his potential in mathematics and committed to study math at Rutgers. Early into his college education, he was uncertain about how he would apply his skills to a fulfilling career.

“One weekend, I was feeling anxious because I had yet to define my career plans,” he said. “I sat down and decided to take control of what I was going to be. Through research I learned that actuarial was a field to consider for math majors. Putting a number to a risk is interesting to me.”

A risk that Joe avoided was working for a company he knew little about. His tenure as an intern and part-time employee gave him firsthand experience inside NJM’s culture. He appreciates working for a company that takes pride in its integrity and operates for the benefit of its policyholders.

“I have friends who are applying and interviewing for jobs and it’s stressful,” he said. “I’m fortunate to have a job that I’ll walk in to my first day and feel comfortable. That will be an amazing feeling.”
