Clear Communication: A Key to Career Growth
Cynthia is organized, detailed oriented, and personable. But when asked what has been most important to her career success at NJM, she provided an interesting response.
“Communication has been key,” she said. “It’s so important when collaborating on projects to ensure everyone is on the same page. It’s why I ask a lot of questions and take notes. I want to gather as much information as possible, so my communication is clear.”
Communication was a major factor in how Cynthia arrived at NJM. Her mom, Mary, worked at the Company for 15 years and had many mother–daughter conversations as to why NJM would be a great fit. When Cynthia finally applied and joined the Company in 2009, it spawned even more family conversations. The two drove to work together every day until Mary retired in 2021.
“My mom had a great experience working at NJM and was always trying to convince me to apply,” Cynthia said. “She talked about the stability and great benefits, but also believed I would have opportunities to advance.
“I do miss my carpool with her since she retired. I really appreciated having that time with her.”
Cynthia started as a “prepper” in Administrative Services, sorting incoming mail for imaging and filing. She was a week away from taking maternity leave when she had an exploratory meeting with her future (and current) boss. The Company had recently formed its Business Process Units and was looking for talented employees with strong organizational skills. Cynthia made an impression during the meeting.
“We discussed a lot, so I sent her a detailed summary to make sure my communication was clear.”
That may have left an even bigger impression.
Shortly after her return, Cynthia was promoted to Business Function Analyst. She was promoted again to a coordinator position before becoming a supervisor in 2015. She earned another promotion and is now the Business Process Administrator for Administrative Services.
Promotions bring greater responsibility and Cynthia now has oversight of Administrative Services’ Business Process Unit, Quality Control, and Vendor Management areas, which includes services for NJM’s cafeteria. She also oversees seven employees.
“Becoming a supervisor was definitely a transition for me,” she said. “I did a lot of extra work to educate myself on different leadership styles, situations you may encounter, and how to respond. You also need to focus on helping employees develop and enhance their careers.”
Away from NJM, Cynthia is often driving her children to sporting events and practices. And she’s even discovered a way to manage that time effectively. Depending on the practice or game location, Cynthia will research restaurants in the area. She’s a foodie and is always up for taste–testing a new cuisine.
And for those testing out a new career?
“Ask a lot of questions and don’t be afraid to speak up,” she said. “Earlier in my career, I was hesitant to ask too many questions, but it truly leads to clear and effective communication.”
