How Curiosity Can Play a Part in Your Career
Children are naturally curious and seek new adventures that help them to learn and grow. Adults often rely more on accumulated knowledge and less on curiosity.
Is there curiosity in your career?
Albert Einstein talked about “intellectual curiosity” and being “passionately curious.” The former is the strong desire to learn more and find answers. The latter is seeking to understand how things work and can be improved.
Curiosity is essential because it can help you problem solve, become more creative, be open to new ideas, and create a growth mindset.
Shelli began her NJM career in 1997 as a Personal Injury Protection Claims Representative in the company’s Parsippany office. She advanced to roles of increasing responsibility with NJM’s Medical Services Administration Department — including Claims Administrator, Claims Manager, and Director. She was recently named Assistant Vice President this year and will assume overall leadership of the MSA Department as of January 1, 2023.
She attributes curiosity as a critical component in her career.
“I was never the one to get things done first,” Shelli said, “but I was curious. I wanted to know the “why” behind everything, and was very focused on quality, empathy, and helping the PIP Department gain consistency and efficiency.”
She would identify an area she thought could be improved and ask her supervisor if she could lead the effort.
“I made myself visible to leadership as solutions- and team-oriented,” Shelli said. “When I was put on projects, I was thoughtful, confident, and upbeat. When I got bored, I’d ask, “What’s next?” So, my leadership always knew I wanted to progress in my career and gave me opportunities to do so.”
There are ways to expand your own curiosity including:
Ask “why” and “what’s next?”
Be open to opinions of others
Get out of your comfort zone
Have a passion for learning new things
