Kevin’s Career Journey: Creating New Paths

An unconventional path into insurance—and how you can make a career switch!

Kevin first joined NJM in 2016 after graduating from Rowan University in 2014 with a double major in public relations and law and justice. With experience in marketing and emergency roadside assistance, NJM’s Human Resources Department recruited Kevin to serve as an account representative in the Personal Lines Department. After nearly 10 years at the Company, Kevin has held his fair share of roles. He was a customer care advocate, a property damage adjuster, and an executive response coordinator. Most recently, he was promoted to supervisor of the General Claims Executive Response Department.

Kevin’s journey into insurance was unexpected, but he’s grateful for the opportunities he’s had to grow his career. He shares three career advancement tips for finding and creating opportunities:

  1. Engage in continuous learning
    Outside of the required learning courses for his roles, Kevin has completed over 30 independent courses to strengthen his skills in areas such as writing, conflict resolution, and computer applications.

  2. Collect constructive feedback
    You may have skills that others see in you, but you don’t see in yourself. Kevin almost passed on applying for a role on his current team because he didn’t think he was a good fit, but a colleague thought otherwise! Ask for advice, trust your coworkers, and listen to opinions that may not reflect your own.

  3. Embrace your differentiators
    Not every career journey is the same. Kevin didn’t have a typical insurance background before joining NJM, but he has used his public relations skills to boost his brand. In a public–facing position, his skills as a communicator have enabled him to stand out and form connections.

Kevin is excited for his future growth at NJM and takes pride in representing the Company.
