Welcoming Young Talent

Headshot of NJM intern Maggie with title "Welcoming Young Talent"

Maggie entered her internship in NJM’s Human Resources (HR) Department eager to learn. She left with a heightened focus on what she wants to pursue after graduating from Penn State University.

“I’m going to search for a job in HR,” she said. “My original plan was to study psychology and become a therapist. Following my internship experience at NJM, I’m really interested to work in benefits or talent development.”

Maggie’s practical learning at NJM began with a three–step interview process. She had never experienced a formal interview and found value in the internship opportunity before being hired.

“I had never interviewed for a job, so I learned a lot during the process,” she said. “When I completed the first two interviews, I felt I was talking too fast and needed to be more concise with my responses. I was better during the final interview, and NJM offered me the position.”

Maggie admitted she was nervous about adapting to a corporate environment, but quickly found comfort at the West Trenton campus. She attended department meetings, contributed individual assignment work, and collaborated on group projects. The common theme throughout was the positive culture at NJM.

“Everyone was welcoming and super friendly,” Maggie said. “I met so many great people and was able to network with full–time employees as well as other interns.

“One of the best projects I worked on was a recruitment marketing project. The objective was to identify what would draw new graduates to an insurance company like NJM. I learned there is a broad range of fields here such as actuary, special investigations, marketing, and talent development. And the benefits at NJM are incredible.”

The recruitment study was a summer group project that connected interns working in different departments throughout the company. The balance of working with seasoned professionals and fellow interns created an ideal learning environment for Maggie.

“The internship was a great experience and I feel better prepared for the future,” she said. “I would definitely recommend the program to future interns. It’s a great place to learn.”
