Getting That First Job After College

How can you highlight your skills to potential employers who may be seeking applicants with more experience than you?

Apply the thinking and coping skills you learned in college to successfully achieve your objective. Seek guidance from your school’s career center, whose responsibility is to assist your transition into the workforce.

To begin:

  • Tailor your resume to the job and company

  • Emphasize your transferrable skills

  • Highlight your core requirements and achievements

  • Create a cover letter with a captivating narrative of your journey

  • Participate in on-campus recruiting

  • Show enthusiasm in your interview

Andrew was in a similar position. He applied to many positions during his job search.

“I would tell students seeking that first job out of college not to get discouraged,” he said. “Keep applying to get the callback. The university career center can help you immensely. That’s what I did at NJIT.”

It was at a recruiting session at the school that Andrew applied for — and was accepted to — NJM’s IT Trainee Program. A job in the company’s Telecom group became available during his training. He expressed an interest in the position and was accepted, moving into this new job after just six months of the 12–month training program! He is now a Telecom Apps Software Associate Engineer, doing programming and some coding.

“I’m learning something new every day,” Andrew said. “I feel I can really grow in this position. There is a lot to learn, and NJM is very open to teaching me. I’m excited to be given the opportunity to take on more challenges.”

He has one more piece of advice for students once they get that first job.

“I think it’s important to interact with everyone you work with,” Andrew said. “It’s one of the reasons to go to the office. All of the sidebar conversations I have with colleagues are invaluable.”

NJM offers a variety of career opportunities in sales, marketing, accounting, finance, IT, actuarial science, and more! The Company provides outstanding benefits and access to wellness programs and continuous learning opportunities and encourages employees to give back to the communities we are privileged to serve.
