Henry’s Career Journey: Taking Every Opportunity

NJM Employee Henry

Where do you see yourself in five, ten, or fifteen years?

When Henry R. started his Career Journey at NJM, he worked as a clerk in Central Files. Call center representatives would take handwritten notes during a phone call, and then employees like Henry physically filed those notes based on the policy number.

With changes in technology replacing roles such as the Central Files Clerk, Henry needed to continuously learn and grow. He capitalized on NJM’s new educational, networking, and job opportunities, so he was able to move up while continuing to grow alongside NJM. Throughout his career, he has been employed at NJM as a Commercial Auto Rater, a Call Center Representative, an Underwriter, a Trainer, and a Supervisor. He is now a Manager in Premium Audit for Workers’ Compensation!

Every day, you might face a new chance to advance your career. Henry recommends three strategies to find and create opportunities:

  1. Join social groups
Your company may offer social groups such as exercise classes, casual sports gatherings, or networking events. Henry joined the NJM Bowling League, where he was able to meet people in different departments to help him network within NJM.

  2. Keep learning
Companies that invest in their employees may offer tuition assistance, internal training, or industry-specific classes. Henry signed up for insurance licensing classes at NJM, where he continued to build a professional network. Additionally, he went on to earn four industry certifications and supervisor credentials via opportunities provided through NJM.

  3. Be open to new jobs and experiences
Scan your company’s internal job boards for positions that use transferable skills. Henry’s career journey shows that growth is a lattice, not a ladder; he moved laterally between many positions before becoming a supervisor. New positions at similar levels can teach new skills that can serve you in future roles.

“If you put in the time and effort, it will pay off,” says Henry. “Throughout my career, NJM had my best interest in mind. In return, I do the best I can to help NJM succeed.”

As technology continues to advance, certain tasks and skills become less valuable. The Central Files Department where Henry started no longer exists at NJM. It is important to take advantage of the opportunities that come along today so that you can prepare for the careers of the future!

NJM offers a variety of career opportunities in sales, marketing, accounting, finance, IT, actuarial science, and more! The Company provides outstanding benefits and access to wellness programs and continuous learning opportunities and encourages employees to give back to the communities we are privileged to serve.
